US (DE): Restrictions for new businesses proposed

The City of Wilmington is proposing restrictions on where legal marijuana businesses could set up shop, as the state is expected to start issuing marijuana business licenses in November.

The Purzycki Administration is submitting a proposal to the City Planning Commission Tuesday that would prohibit marijuana businesses from being established close to neighborhoods and schools in the city. Marijuana cultivation and manufacturing operations would only be permitted in Wilmington's manufacturing districts, heavy commercial areas and waterfront manufacturing - commercial areas.

The proposal is subject to further review and a vote by Wilmington City Council.

"The proposed zoning plan, which will be reviewed thoroughly by the City Planning Commission on Tuesday evening and then further reviewed over the next month by City Council before a possible vote in November, would prohibit marijuana businesses from being established close to neighborhoods and schools," Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki said. "Our goal with this plan is to make this new category of business available to those who wish to participate from a business or customer standpoint while being respectful of areas of the City that need to be shielded from it."
