US (CA): County repeals background check law, reduces tax rate

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors voted on and approved two cannabis-related action items during their Nov. 12 regular meeting. In the first of those agenda items, the supervisors voted 4-1 to repeal the county's ordinance code related to the cannabis background clearance badge program.

According to a county staff report, through criminal background check screening procedures and eligibility criteria for applicants, the badge program prevents "individuals from owning or working at commercial cannabis businesses within Calaveras County who have a prior conviction or convictions which demonstrate a proclivity for violence or violent threats."

In his presentation to the board on this item, Doug Oliver, chief building official of the county's building department, noted that last April, the supervisors voted against a repeal of the program by a vote of 3-2.

He added that on May 14, the board directed him to bring the item back to them for another review.
