US (SD): 5 new MMJ licenses could be issued on Monday

With the legalization of recreational marijuana Initiated Measure 29 voted down by South Dakotans, the Rapid City Council will have to decide if they want to issue five new medical cannabis licenses.

Previously, the Council had approved a pause on issuing the licenses. The city attorney said, the Council wanted to see what would happen with IM 29 in the election before issuing the licenses.

He said a request was made to the board to provide staff guidance on the decision to issue those licenses and Wednesday, the city's Legal and Finance Committee recommended the Council lift the pause and issue the five licenses.

"There's already a list of priority list for applicants to licenses, so we'll just continue to go down that list assuming that Council votes to lift the moratorium on Monday night," City Attorney Joel Landeen said.
