US: Vermont towns opt against retail cannabis

On annual Town Meeting Day on Tuesday, Fairfax and Hinesburg voted against allowing cannabis retailers to operate in their towns.

"Honestly, not surprised based on the size and location of the towns," said Amy Lems, a Vermont Growers Association Board member and legislative advisor who sits on VGA's Policy Committee. "With less than 600 people in Hinesburg, it was a loss by only six votes, which says something about the town."

Lems said she would love to know what factors are influencing voters.

"I think the lack of information/understanding as to how it all works is a big part of the issue," she said. "It is one of the reasons VGA pays close attention to what is happening in the Vermont cannabis industry. It affects all Vermonters, in and out of the cannabis industry. It facilitates informed decision making."
