Tilray to leave New Zealand market on May 31

The country's first certified cannabis supplier is leaving New Zealand to focus on the Australian market - but the local industry says while it's disappointing, there are lots of other options.

After a strategic review of its operations, Nasdaq-listed and Toronto Stock Exchange-listed Canadian medical cannabis firm Tilray Medical confirmed its final day of trading in Aotearoa would be on May 31, with plans to grow further in Australia.

In 2021, Tilray was the first medical cannabis supplier to meet quality standards under the the national Medical Cannabis Scheme which came into effect in April 2020. According to the Ministry of Health, Tilray was certified to dispense two flower products and five cannabis-based oil products.

Tilray Medical began as one of the first companies to become an approved licensed producer of medical cannabis in Canada. It moved to building certified cannabis production facilities in Portugal and Germany and now operates across a range of countries - no longer including New Zealand.
