Dutch grower highlights role of energy efficiency in Cannabis Supply Chain Experiment

Chosen by the Dutch government to advance the Controlled Cannabis Supply Chain Experiment, Holigram was tasked with producing 6.5 tons of cannabis annually. The high operational costs of commercial cannabis cultivation are well established, with labor as the largest expense and energy consumption a close second. Integrating state-of-the-art automation, advanced technology, and managing hundreds of precision grow lights for optimal, consistent yields, commercial facilities grapple with significant energy demands that impact the bottom line.

The Dutch cannabis experiment
After years of informal policy, experiment participants like Holigram are now charged with demonstrating that a regulated supply chain can deliver superior outcomes for the public, while proving the economic sustainability and growth potential for the Northern European region.

Operating out of a 30,000-square-foot canopy capable of producing 6,500 kilograms of dried cannabis flower each year, Holigram needed a technology partner capable of delivering high-caliber precision at scale. TSRgrow was selected as their lighting partner for this ambitious mission.

Headquartered in Rhode Island, TSRgrow supplied a tailored solution that elevates cultivation far beyond standard lighting. "We deployed our advanced LED lighting solution coupled with smart environmental sensors, central power management, and real-time monitoring through our GROWHub Software. This unified, recipe-driven system empowers Holigram to meticulously manage every aspect of cultivation—regulating leaf temperature, adjusting light intensity, and ultimately reducing energy expenditures," said Mikhail Sagal, President of TSRgrow.

The role of energy efficiency
At the core of TSRgrow's energy strategy is its Smart Remote Power Server technology, which removes traditional drivers from the grow room and centralizes power distribution in a single, clean location. This allows for more efficient heat management, reduces HVAC loads, and enables precise control over every light fixture. "Remote power is what enables us to give cultivators ultimate flexibility and control, while reducing both OpEx and CapEx costs," said Sagal. "It's not just about saving energy, it's about delivering power exactly where and when it's needed."

"We are excited to collaborate with TSRgrow now and in the future," said Jetze de Raad, CEO of Holigram. "I wholeheartedly recommend TSRgrow to any grower, anywhere in the world."

The cornerstone of TSRgrow's lighting solution at Holigram lies in true system-level integration. "Our technology connects seamlessly with Holigram's Building Management System, aligning environmental controls, lighting protocols, and grow recipes facility-wide. This enables the team to monitor and replicate strain-specific energy usage and cultivation performance, ensuring consistency from one batch to the next."

As the Netherlands works to prove that legal, regulated cannabis cultivation can be safe, sustainable, and economically viable, Holigram's implementation of TSRgrow's advanced LED lighting and remote power solutions offer a powerful model for the industry. "This is what smarter growing looks like," says Mikhail Sagal.
