Over the past five years, Turkey has significantly increased its hemp production. The government now appears poised to take this a step further by adding cannabis to the list of pharmaceutical uses through a bill recently submitted to parliament.
If approved, this measure will allow controlled domestic cannabis production to be used to supply raw materials for medical and therapeutic products. To ensure strict oversight, distribution will be limited to licensed pharmacies.
Already used in various sectors in Turkey, including automotive, construction, textiles, paper and biofuels, cannabis has become a valuable crop whose economic importance continues to grow. The new regulation marks a strategic shift towards higher value-added applications, aligning Turkey with the global dynamics around medical cannabis .
"We need to develop a strategy that takes us from cultivation to high-value finished products. This is how both producers and the country can benefit," Professor Selim AytaƧ, a leading academic expert on cannabis, was quoted as saying by the Turkish press .
