Portugal: Two medical cannabis companies face temporary license suspensions

Two Portuguese medical cannabis operators, Herdade das Barrocas and Cannprisma, have had their licenses temporarily suspended by national regulator INFARMED.

Herdade das Barrocas confirmed that the suspension affects its ability to import and export cannabis. The company stressed that the measure is part of an administrative procedure and "does not stem from any criminal or disciplinary wrongdoing, nor does it undermine the legality, quality, or safety" of its products. It added that it is pursuing all available legal avenues and expects a resolution "in the next few weeks."

In a press release, Cannprisma stated that the company is currently absent from the INFARMED list due "to irregularities in documentation provided by an external client."

"This is a specific situation unrelated to our direct operations, which has already been duly clarified with the competent authorities. We are working in full cooperation with all entities involved and are confident that the situation will be resolved shortly, allowing us to resume normal activity very soon," said.

Part of a wider shake-up
The developments come amid an ongoing period of turbulence for Portugal's medical cannabis industry. Earlier in May, several companies (not Herdade das Barrocas and Cannprisma) were investigated for alleged links to criminal organizations, as we reported here. While both companies emphasize that the current suspensions are administrative in nature, they highlight the heightened compliance environment now shaping the Portuguese market.
