Dutch cannabis grower faces €35M bill to resolve odor complaints

Cannabis grower CanAdelaar in Hellevoetsluis may need to invest another €35 million in "possible solutions" to put an end to odor nuisance experienced by local residents. That is the conclusion of a new consultancy report.

This week, a fresh court case took place in which CanAdelaar contested the rules imposed on the company. If odor complaints are still recorded after September 4, 2025, the grower faces fines that could rise to €2 million. This comes on top of investments already made to tackle the issue, so far without the desired effect, as residents continue to complain and the municipality has lost patience.

Court decision expected in September
Local broadcaster Rijnmond reported from the courtroom, where the judge promised a ruling before September 4. CanAdelaar's lawyer did not hide his frustration over the process, telling Rijnmond: "This is a disguised closure."

Complaints drop after new measures
In the past week, the environmental authority registered just six complaints, the lowest number in some time. To achieve this, CanAdelaar installed additional filters and removed a fully grown section of the 180,000 plants housed in its greenhouse.
