Greenhouse construction affected by US and China import tariffs

Dutch greenhouse builders are going through a tough time right now. On top of the 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum, they're also being hit with extra charges on Chinese goods, explains Annie van de Riet from AVAG in De Telegraaf (link in Dutch). According to her, all these tariffs combined make it about a quarter more expensive to build a greenhouse than before. Because of the higher costs, many clients are hesitating to sign new contracts. The uncertainty is so great that greenhouse construction has practically come to a standstill.

Atrium Agri is one of the companies feeling the pinch. Earlier this summer, CEO Marck Hagen already spoke about it on RTL Z. Now, in De Telegraaf, he says: "It's tricky at the moment, but in a few months everyone will be used to the tariffs, and then I expect more projects to go ahead." For the time being, many Dutch greenhouse builders are turning their attention to new markets to keep business moving.
