US (CT): Drug Control Director resigns following surprise inspection backlash

Six months after a surprise inspection by state drug control agents only 24 hours after a Connecticut cannabis cultivator testified before a legislative committee, the man who ordered the inspection has stepped down.

The inspection and its timing, which some say sent chills through the state's relatively new legalized cannabis industry, seems to have stemmed from a misunderstanding by the director of the Department of Consumer Protection's Drug Control Division, Rodrick Marriott. According to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Marriott said he was acting out of concern for public safety.

It all started March 19 during a public hearing on cannabis-related legislation before the General Law Committee. Affinity Grow CEO Rino Ferrarese testified in opposition to legislative language in the bill related to cannabis testing. Twenty-four hours later, two drug control agents from the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) made an unannounced visit to Ferrarese's grow facility in Portland.

According to the documents provided through the FOIA request, the one-hour inspection revealed that Affinity Grow was operating in compliance with current testing standards for products to be sold in Connecticut, and the two agents reported back to Marriott that they had found no issues.
