U.S. President Donald Trump has shared a video on the medical benefits of CBD for seniors in a pivotal moment for hemp legislation and the cannabis rescheduling process.
The video, shared on his Truth Social yesterday, promoted the health benefits of CBD for seniors. A voiceover explained that CBD may help restore the endocannabinoid system, which helps control functions such as mood, appetite, sleep, and pain by using natural chemicals similar to those found in cannabis, like cannabidiol, or CBD, the main non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis.
"Hemp-derived CBD can help them feel better, live longer, and improve their quality of life significantly," the video says. It also emphasized Trump's efforts to legalize hemp through the 2018 Farm Bill, which played a major role in allowing the production, the sale, and the use of CBD across the country, and stated that now "it's time to educate doctors on the endocannabinoid system, provide medicare coverage for CBD, and give millions of seniors the support they deserve." The video also features a clip from Fox News describing the economic benefits of medical cannabis legalization, which could save $64 billion a year if fully integrated into the healthcare system.
The video was produced by the Commonwealth Project, an initiative designed to integrate medical cannabis into mainstream senior healthcare. Funded by Howard Kessler, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, as well as a former financial services executive, the organization advocates for alternative therapies that could reduce healthcare costs for older adults. It has also participated in federal hearings on cannabis rescheduling.
