Why 405 nm light matters
The 405 nm violet-blue band occupies a unique "sweet spot" in plant lighting. It's energetic enough to stimulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling that drives terpene biosynthesis, yet safe, efficient, and more cost-effective than UV-B.

For cannabis growers, this translates into a practical way to unlock enhanced aroma, flavor, and overall flower quality—without introducing unnecessary risk or complexity into the grow.

405 nm photons excite porphyrins and flavins within plant tissues, triggering ROS production without exposing crops to harmful UV. These ROS penetrate epidermal layers and initiate oxidative signaling cascades that upregulate the synthesis of secondary metabolites, including terpenes.

Suggested light strategy
By applying short, controlled pulses of 405 nm light during the final days of flowering, cultivators can activate these natural defense pathways—boosting terpene levels precisely when flower value is determined.

405 nm light and VPD
ROS signaling also interacts with plant responses to vapor pressure deficit (VPD). While VPD drives transpiration, ROS helps regulate stomatal activity, giving plants an added layer of adaptive control under environmental stress.
