Nigeria debates legalization of cannabis oils

Stakeholders from across policy, regulatory agencies, research institutions, healthcare, and civil society, among others, on Wednesday deliberated on whether Nigeria should legalise cannabis oil for medicinal purposes, within the country's legal and policy framework on its use.

The stakeholders' workshop, themed "The Cannabis Oil Debate: The Path Forward for Nigeria," which was held in Abuja, was part of the Nigerian Academy of Science consensus study to examine scientific evidence on the therapeutic uses of cannabis oil, including international best practices for its regulation, production, and distribution.

It also aimed to identify potential risks, social concerns, and research gaps that must be addressed before any policy decisions are made, as well as review Nigeria's legal and policy landscape regarding cannabis use.

The stakeholders emphasised that while cannabis oil may hold medical and economic potential, any move toward legalisation must be guided by scientific evidence, supported by robust regulatory systems, and aligned with Nigeria's cultural and social realities.
