A former cannabis farm in Saskatoon, Canada, could be turned into a data center. The 130,135 sq ft (12,090 sqm) facility is located at 1 Plant Technology Road and occupies around 100 acres of land. It currently has access to three 500kVA transformers, one 1,000kVA transformer, and a 2,000kVA transformer.
The land parcel is zoned for agricultural use. The previous tenant, Prairie Plant Systems, was a specialist in medical cannabis. In 2018, the company was acquired by competitor Aurora Cannabis, and Aurora chose to shut down the Saskatoon facility in 2020 following Covid-induced economic difficulties.
Saskatoon is the largest city in the central Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The province is not a prominent data center market, with four facilities operated by local operator SaskTel in Saskatoon and Regina, as well as a number of small facilities from local MSPs. Fujitsu previously operated a facility in Regina, built around 2012.
It is not uncommon for data centers and indoor farms to be repurposed into one another, given their similar infrastructural requirements and heat and power footprints.
