US (CA): 'Black Market Cannabis' goes legit

At its Oct. 14 meeting, the Eureka Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for a new cannabis business with an anachronistic name – Black Market Cannabis.

Sited in a 1,590 square-foot building at 2235 Broadway, applicant Caleb Salstrom will operate a retail cannabis sales and cultivation business.

It will include "interactive" and "educational" cultivation viewing rooms.

Sited just north of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant and south of another vacant building, the project site, as noted by Commissioner Steve Lazar, has historically hosted a wide variety of commercial businesses serving the "visiting, touring public."

A neighbor of the site said he supports the project, as his own property has been subjected to a "string of burglaries" and he welcomes the added lighting and security a new business will bring.

Future improvements to Broadway could eliminate some on-street parking and the California Department of Transportation has recommended the permit be denied.
