It was back in February this year when Anthony Traurig from CannIntelligence said that the real beast in EU cannabis was the medical space in Germany. He pointed at import numbers, which had grown significantly quarter by quarter since the adoption of the now renowned cannabis regulations. This trend does seem to be continuing, according to new data published by BfArM, the German medical cannabis authority.
In their breakdown, imports of dry flowers for medical and scientific purposes amount to almost fifty seven tons, 56,915 kilos to be precise. The quarterly increase is significant, and the graph shows a clear upward trend.

Interesting numbers also appear in the list of top importers. To the surprise of no one, Canada stands at the top of the podium. Next to the North American country there is Portugal, the second largest importer of medical cannabis in Germany. Both countries registered a large year over year increase. At the same time, while Canada almost doubled its imports, from roughly 33 tons to 66 tons, Portugal went from 17 tons in 2024 to more than 42 tons in 2025.

As the medical side keeps growing, the adult use space is also gaining momentum, according to numbers from the BCAv, the Federal Working Group of Cannabis Associations. Currently, 357 permits have been issued out of a total of 791 applications submitted.
