The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a cannabis research license for the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies, establishing a groundbreaking partnership between Trinidad and Tobago's premier academic institution and Antigua and Barbuda's burgeoning cannabis sector.
Medicinal Cannabis Authority CEO Regis Burton announced the development following a recent stakeholder meeting where Professor Rosemary Belle Antoine, principal of UWI St Augustine, served as guest speaker before meeting with the full Cabinet.
"To have Professor Belle visit Antigua, see our local industry, and then offer to partner with our industry really does validate the work that we're doing," Burton said. "It speaks volumes, knowing the magnitude and the influence that Professor has on the cannabis space across the region."
Professor Belle Antoine is a significant figure in Caribbean cannabis policy, having served as chairperson of CARICOM's Commission on Marijuana from 2014 to 2018. Her willingness to partner with Antigua and Barbuda—despite Trinidad and Tobago's own cannabis industry being in a "much more infant stage"—underscores the progress made locally.
