Portugal has become an important producer of medicinal cannabis, and one of the companies leading this growth is Ahara. When the team discovered problems with their water quality, they contacted Ultramins for support. Grower Joao Lourenço explains what happened.
"We approached Ultramins about two years ago to discuss the usage of the USAF™ technology in our water system. E-coli bacteria was found in the 680m3 fresh water storage, which was a great concern.
Ahara grows cannabis in a greenhouse just east of Lisbon and operates two drain silos in addition to their fresh-water storage. "For disinfection of the drain water we use UV, but we were not getting the results we hoped for."
The grower also uses reverse osmosis before the water enters the storage tank and adds regular hydrogen peroxide at that stage. "The water will last for max 2-3 days on a hot summer day, meaning we need to treat the water in a limited time frame."

After reviewing the situation with Ultramins, Ahara installed three DT100 units in the fresh-water reservoir and one DT100 in each drain line. According to Joao, Ultramins expected the cavitation technology to remove E. coli and stop biofilm from forming. "The be honest, the results were above our expectations! The E-coli levels dropped to non-detectable levels and we even shut-off the UV. Another great benefit is how easy it is to use and there are hardly any operational costs, or maintenance. Conclusion: we are happy with the decision we took to go for this new technology and we recommend it to anyone visiting our site but also in general!
