Bostjan Veronik, Waboost:

"Peroxide is not treating the root cause, only the symptoms"

For years, growers have relied on peroxide-based products to keep irrigation lines, nutrient tanks, and greenhouse water systems clean. "While peroxide is effective at rapidly oxidizing pathogens and reducing visible biofilm, its action is temporary and superficial", states Bostjan Veronik, founder of Waboost. "As more growers transition toward precision horticulture and sustainable practices, a critical insight is becoming clear: peroxide is not treating the root cause of water-system contamination — it is only treating the symptoms."

The horticultural industry faces persistent challenges in maintaining clean, oxygen-rich, and biologically stable water networks. "Biofilm buildup, anaerobic pathogens, and declining water quality have long been managed through chemical shock treatments", Bostjan says. "Peroxide provides a fast response, but its effects dissipate within minutes. Once neutralized, conditions that promote microbial regrowth return almost immediately. This cycle of chemical treatment followed by rapid recolonization is not only inefficient but can introduce additional risk to crops, irrigation equipment, and microbiological balance."

Moreover, he says, peroxide is non-selective. "While eliminating harmful organisms, it also destroys beneficial aerobic microbes that support healthy root development and nutrient uptake. The repeated eradication of all microbial life leads to instability in the root zone, making plants more susceptible to stress, disease, and nutrient fluctuations. As a result, growers often find themselves in a constant battle, treating recurring symptoms with increasingly frequent chemical interventions."

According to Bostjan, the core problem lies deeper than the pathogens themselves. "Water systems that lack oxygen, movement, and stable microbial balance create an ideal environment for biofilm formation. Without addressing these underlying conditions, any chemical treatment — including peroxide — becomes a short-lived solution. What growers need is a method that resolves the fundamental cause rather than temporarily masking the effect."

Nanobubble technology: Addressing the cause, not the symptom
A growing number of greenhouse operators are now turning to nanobubble oxygenation as a long-term solution. The Waboost nanobubble generators inject ozone nanobubbles into the cultivation water. "Unlike peroxide, nanobubbles remain suspended in water for weeks, continuously elevating dissolved oxygen levels and promoting aerobic conditions in irrigation systems and root zones. This persistent oxygenation disrupts the environmental conditions required for biofilm formation and anaerobic pathogen growth. Instead of repeatedly killing microbial overgrowth, nanobubbles prevent it from taking hold in the first place. They enhance system stability, support beneficial microbes, and reduce reliance on chemical disinfection — offering growers a safer, more sustainable path to water quality management."

"Our message to growers is simple," Bostjan cooncludes. "Peroxide solves today's problem, but nanobubbles prevent tomorrows. The industry deserves solutions that eliminate the root cause of contamination rather than chasing its effects. With nanobubble technology, growers can finally break the cycle of constant chemical treatment."

Waboost recently announced its Rent to Buy program, working with greenhouses across USA, Canada, Europe and Africa, the program offers a quick and affordable introduction into the technology.
