US (MN): Hermantown approves permit for cannabis cultivation facility

Hermantown will soon be home to a cannabis growing facility following action by the city council at its meeting Monday night. The council approved a special use permit for Up North Growery, a Duluth-based business.

It allows construction of a 2,700-square-foot cannabis cultivation facility on 40 acres near Highway 53 and Abrahamson Road. Cannabis would be grown inside the secured building and then transported to the company's retail location in Duluth. Hermantown Community Development Director Eric Johnson said the facility will be required to meet state security standards.

"As part of the process, the building is going to be secured through the Office of Cannabis Management requirements," Johnson said. "There will be on-site alarms and monitoring, flood lights, security cameras — all part of a system including keypad access."

A public hearing on the proposal was held in November during a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.
