US (CA): Trinity County Cannabis Tax Ad Hoc Committee to host public input meetings

The Trinity County Cannabis Tax Ad Hoc Committee, formed by the Board of Supervisors in 2025, invites cultivators, residents, and interested stakeholders to participate in upcoming public meetings to discuss the County's cannabis tax.

The committee was established in response to public comments regarding significant challenges faced by licensed cultivators, particularly those stemming from dramatic changes in wholesale and retail markets. To date, public suggestions have included reducing or eliminating taxes on specific product categories, as well as adjusting or eliminating tiered tax levels.

The committee will hold two public meetings. The first is scheduled for Friday, January 9, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Trinity County Fairgrounds. The second meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 14, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Weaverville Library.

The committee serves in an advisory role only, and all recommendations will be forwarded to the full Board of Supervisors. Community members should be aware of several legal and fiscal constraints that affect potential outcomes.

The cannabis tax was adopted through a voter-approved ballot measure, which limits the Board of Supervisors' ability to make changes without returning the issue to voters. Cannabis tax revenues are deposited into the County's General Fund and have exceeded $850,000 since the tax was introduced, with approximately $350,000 estimated for the 2025–2026 budget.

Any reduction in cannabis tax revenue during the current fiscal year would require corresponding reductions or reallocations in other programs and services supported by the General Fund.
