US (MD): Brookeville rejects cultivation facility ammendment

The Brookeville Council voted 4-3 not to accept the first reading of an ordinance amending the 2024 ordinance that allowed the cultivation, processing and laboratory testing of medical marijuana and adult-use cannabis in the city. The ordinance, if, approved' would also continue the ban on the establishment of retail dispensaries selling medical and adult-use cannabis in the city.

Voting not to accept the first reading were mayor Chuck Letner, vice mayor Dennis Piper and council members Jared Ledford and JD Fowler. Voting to accept the first reading were council members Mike Hughes, Darren McNew and Stephan Crane.

"In 2024, city council passed Ordinance 2024-09 to establish the cultivation, processing and laboratory testing of medical marijuana and adult use cannabis as permitted use in the 1-2 General Industrial District subject to the limitation of that only one zoning permit would be issued for this use," law director Rod Stephan said.

"At the request of council member Michael Hughes, Ordinance 2026-02 has been prepared and submitted to city council to amend the zoning code and establish a total ban on any permits for cultivation, processing and laboratory testing of medical marijuana and adult use cannabis and maintaining the ban on retail dispensaries for medical marijuana and adult use cannabis," Stephan continued.
