Ohioans for Cannabis Choice is moving forward with its effort to put Senate Bill 56 before voters in November. The Ohio Attorney General's Office approved the petition summary language submitted by the group, which paves the way for signature collection, according to a community announcement.
"We are ready to hit the streets and begin collecting 250,000 valid signatures because we know voters will say no to SB 56 because it is government overreach," Joseph Ellwood, a petitioner and hemp farmer in Tuscarawas County, said in the announcement. "The people spoke in 2023 when they overwhelmingly voted to legalize cannabis, and we are going to allow them to speak once again this November by voting no on SB 56."
SB 56, signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine in December 2025, overhauls Ohio's adult-use and medical marijuana program following voter approval of State Issue 2 in 2023.
Businesses and residents across Ohio have expressed interest in joining the effort, according to Scotty Hunter, a petitioner and owner of Urban Artifact/Coastalo/Niche Beverage in Cincinnati.
