New Zealand: Guests, growers spend the day at rural cannabis facility

The sun was out, the breeze was soft, and a group of international delegates enjoyed a day of speeches, networking, and alfresco dining among rows of cannabis plants.

New Zealand's largest cannabis grower, Puro, welcomed about 50 delegates, including many of its customers, to its rural Kēkerengū farm on Thursday, to see cannabis growing in action, and do a few deals. Just off State Highway 1 in the small South Marlborough settlement, about an hour from Blenheim, the farm had 65,000 plants growing in the strategic location, chosen for its sunlight hours, perfect soil, ocean breeze, direction of mountains, and airflow.

Sam Holt, owner of Australian company Cannatrek, said the company had been working with Puro for the last three years. Holt said his mother in law grew cannabis in the US, and when he would get pain in his knees from running or skiing, he would use her tinctures, oils, and gummies for relief.

"I could not believe the the benefits for me, so that's what got me interested in it," he said. "So I really believe in the plant, how it's treated, how it's cured, and when I first came to New Zealand and I stood on this property, and I felt the breeze, and the sun ... I thought this is the ideal place to grow cannabis."
