from TUCO pioneer to indispensable force:

Leo van der Hoeven celebrates 50 years at Hoogendoorn

Hoogendoorn Growth Management is celebrating a rare milestone: Leo van der Hoeven marks 50 years of service. Half a century of craftsmanship, commitment, and loyalty.

In 1974, Hoogendoorn introduced TUCO, the first climate computer for greenhouse horticulture. It was a breakthrough that changed the industry and laid the groundwork for data-driven, automated cultivation around the world. Behind that innovation were pioneers with vision, technical skill, and persistence. Leo was one of them.

As one of the first engineers involved in developing TUCO, Leo worked on every detail. In total, 150 systems were built, and he personally assembled and tested each one. His precision and dedication helped set the standard for the technological progress that followed, including today's autonomous growing system IIVO.

This jubilee is even more special as Leo will also celebrate his 70th birthday on March 2. Two milestones that underline his long and exceptional connection with Hoogendoorn.

Although Leo officially retired nearly three years ago after 47 years of service, he did not stay away for long. After a short and well-earned break, he returned as Facility Manager. He remains a familiar face at the head office. As caretaker and practical problem-solver, he is always ready to help, whether it is a technical issue, maintenance task, or a solution no one else has thought of. He still brings the same dedication he showed 50 years ago.

At the end of March, Leo will say his final farewell to Hoogendoorn, closing an impressive 50-year chapter. After that, he will fully enjoy his well-deserved retirement.

Managing Director Peter Hendriks reflects on the occasion: "With TUCO, Hoogendoorn took the first step in the digital revolution of greenhouse horticulture 50 years ago, and Leo was one of the colleagues who made that possible. His craftsmanship, dedication, and practical approach still make him indispensable in the office today. Leo simply gets things done. We are incredibly grateful, not only for what he has done, but especially for who he is."

"With his 50-year anniversary and his 70th birthday, we celebrate more than a career. We celebrate the person behind the technology. A pioneer from the very beginning, and still a valued and trusted colleague."
