The Albert Lea City Council is set to vote on significant changes to local cannabis and tobacco regulations on Monday. The proposed cannabis regulation changes include increasing the limit on local registrations from two to four and requiring more extensive background checks for applicants. Additionally, the city will not maintain a waiting list for applicants once the four-business limit is reached, voiding applications after 30 days if no slots are available.
The council will also consider changes to tobacco regulations, aiming to limit the number of tobacco stores or smoke shops to one per owner, aligning with existing rules for alcohol and cannabis licenses.
In addition, the council will decide whether to accept a $1.46 million bid to remodel portions of City Hall, enhancing security and creating more efficient workspaces. This project will also update lighting, electrical, and other systems.
Public hearings on street reconstruction projects, including parts of Valley Avenue, Marshall Street, 14th Street, and St. Mary Avenue, will take place before the council votes on proceeding.
