Virginia State University holding high tunnel growing sessions for professionals

Join the Virginia State University Greater College of Horticulture for two upcoming workshops on using high tunnels to improve crop production and extend your growing season!

Workshop 1: High Tunnel Berry Production will take place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM 105 at Oak Street, Emporia, VA. It is an in-person session.

This hands-on session provides an overview of berry production using high tunnel systems. Participants will learn about site selection, variety considerations, seasonal management practices, and strategies for optimizing plant health and productivity in protected growing environments. Designed for growers of all experience levels interested in enhancing crop quality, reducing environmental stress, and increasing market opportunities. Workshop 2: High Tunnels — Beginning and Extending the Growing Season will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. It is a Microsoft Teams Virtual Meeting.

This virtual workshop focuses on increasing farm efficiency and profitability by using high tunnels to start the growing season earlier and extend it longer. Featuring Dr. Sanjun Gu, Virginia State University Extension Specialist of Horticulture and SARE Coordinator for Virginia, who will draw on decades of personal research in vegetable production using low tunnels and high tunnels to help you prepare for the 2026 growing season.
