Chris Mayle was working as a salesman in 2012 when he heard rumblings that Connecticut might legalize cannabis for medical purposes. He and a business partner started writing what would become a 1,000-page application at night, after work.
"We were one of four awarded, but I think just because we were Advanced Grow Labs, our name began with 'A,' they probably gave us license 0001," he said. "I'm guessing CT Pharma was two, and Curaleaf was three. I'm assuming they did it alphabetically."
Mayle and his partners sold AGL in 2019 to Green Thumb Industries for a reported $80 million, including $15 million to be paid in cash plus shares in the new venture. But Mayle's cannabis journey didn't end there.
Mayle, along with other business partners, has now built his second cannabis company, Bridgeport-based Lucky Break Cannabis, and is heading in a direction with few others in the industry: The cannabis processing and manufacturing company is focused on supplying Connecticut's flagging medical cannabis market.
