A former cannabis growing operation in a southern Alberta town is now producing gourmet mushrooms, as well as other produce. Last August, Hypha Farms Ltd. took possession of the Claresholm facility, which had been vacant for a couple of years after Custom Cannabis Inc. was deemed bankrupt in August 2023.
So far, Hypha Farms has two of the five greenhouses at the site up and running, and another will start being used in early April.
The business has begun a retrofit to create a lab to suit its specific needs for growing mushrooms, said CEO Devon Davidson. That project will take another month to complete, with a temporary lab currently operating. According to its website, the indoor, vertical farm grows a variety of gourmet mushrooms, including blue oyster, chestnut and lion's mane.
Davidson and his brother, Wayne, started Hypha Farms in grow tents in his garage in 2021. They later moved their operation to a location in the hamlet of Mossleigh, in Vulcan County, for a couple of years, but outgrew it and needed a larger space to keep up with increasing customer demand.
