One of the possible opportunities for growing hemp in Malheur County is bringing a third major crop to help sustain the county’s agriculture base into the future.
That was part of the message presented during the Ontario Area Chamber of Commerce Forum at the Clarion Inn on Monday, by Clint Shock, former director of the Malheur Experiment Station.
Shock, who is doing research on hemp and conducting various trials, said that hemp has distinct opportunities, but they are not the same everywhere.
Currently, cattle and onions are the two major crops in the county, Shock noted, with sugar beets, potatoes and alfalfa less so, and other things are needed for crop rotation.
Hemp that is produced for such things as textiles, food and a large variety of products is grown in states farther east where there is more reliable rainfall.
