US (CA): Contra Costa County cannabis operation gets approval

A 37-acre farm in unincorporated Brentwood will be allowed to grow small cannabis plants for profit, despite worries from some residents and officials that it’s too close to the Sunset Park athletic complex, a frequent site of youth sports.

The owners of Diablo Valley Farms, off Sellers Avenue just outside Brentwood’s city limits, already grow vegetables and trees. They can now add cannabis to their list of crops after the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously granted the farm a permit to cultivate commercial cannabis.

It’s a decision that hinged on whether Sunset Park counts as a “youth center” that primarily hosts recreational activities for minors, which would disqualify a cannabis farm from being within a thousand feet of it.

But Diablo Valley, whose application was previously denied by the county Planning Commission, successfully appealed to the supervisors that the city-owned complex is just a park, not a youth center. Diablo Valley Farms’ attorney Shawn Zovod pointed out at a meeting Tuesday that the facility is available for use only upon reservations, and is otherwise gated and locked.
