CAN (SK): Regina family turns to cannabis cultivation to save their business

Switching industries can be a risky move in the business world, but the Kratz family found that this was exactly what they needed to turn a profit.

After a streak of bad luck and an ingenious flash of insight, the family decided to rescue their Regina-based home construction business Kratz Homes Ltd from the depths of the housing crash by turning it into a cannabis growing company.

Now named Western Cannabis, the family began marketing their first batch of products in February. This followed a lengthy, three-year transition process which involved renovating their entire workspace, filling out hundreds of pages of paperwork and learning the ins and outs of cultivation.

Alex Kratz, who co-owns the business with his father Ralph, said their effort has paid off. “It’s had its ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change it for anything … It was perfect timing” he said in an interview Monday.
