Small cannabis growers push for excise tax reform in Canada

Dan Sutton, CEO of Tantalus Labs, a cannabis producer based in British Columbia, is trying to draw attention to an issue that many in the industry say threatens to bankrupt small Canadian cannabis companies.

The excise tax levied on cannabis is set at a fixed rate of C $ 1 per gram, rather than a percentage of sales. According to Dan Sutton, the tax should rather be based on the volumes produced or sold, as is the case in the beer industry.

It is with a view to changing the law that Dan Sutton set up the Stand for Craft campaign to put pressure on politicians.

“The excise tax regime as it exists today, since the start of legalization, has ended up taxing microphones, craftsmen, and small and medium-sized enterprises to the tune of 20 to 30% of their turnover maximum business."
