“With increased efficiency and quality, automated trimming is the new gold standard for cannabis processing”

"Cultivators are seeking ways to increase their production capacity and lower operating costs. A common challenge businesses face is keeping up with the volume of their harvest in a timely and cost-effective manner. With hand trimming, businesses are not able to see nearly the same throughput they do with machine and automated trimming," says Emma Levine, Marketing Coordinator at Mobius. Their M108S Trimmer solves the problem of increasing production speed and capacity without compromising the quality of the flower and trim. "For example, Aleafia Health reduced their speed to market time from one week to just 4 hours using Mobius equipment."

Automated trimming
The Mobius M108S Trimmer is a continuous throughput cannabis trimmer designed to supercharge production capacity for any commercial-scale operation. The trimmer works by feeding untrimmed cannabis and hemp through the infeed port, and the machine carefully separates the fan leaves and excess trim from the cannabis buds, leaving only the valuable flower. The machine uses the patented AirThread Tension Tumbler technology, which provides over 50% more access to the blades cutting surface. "This delivers the industry's closest trim while preserving the cannabis' integrity and trichome and terpene levels. The M108S also has an integrated separation system that automatically separates the trim from the buds, so you can still utilize the trim for other procedures such as pre-rolls and extraction."

Levine explains that the Mobius M108S Trimmer is gentle on flowers, and the quality of the product is never compromised. "Trichome levels remain high, and terpene profiles are kept intact when the buds go through the trimmer. Lab tests have proven that cannabis trimmed by a Mobius M108S Trimmer was +/- 2% of total THC and +/- 1% of terpenes than material that was trimmed by hand. Due to the manual processing workflow of hand trimming, cannabis ends up losing more of its valuable trichomes and aromas from human handling, even by skilled workers. With increased efficiency and quality, automated trimming is the new gold standard for cannabis processing."

Solving challenges
According to Levine, cultivators are seeking ways to increase their production capacity and lower operating costs. Yet a common challenge that businesses are facing is keeping up with the volume of their harvest in a timely and cost-effective manner. "With hand trimming, businesses are not able to see nearly the same throughput they do with machine and automated trimming. The Mobius M108S can process 60lbs/ hour of dry flower and 120lbs/ hour of wet cannabis material, an exponential growth from what a team of hand trimmers can produce. Aleafia Health was able to reduce their speed to market time from one week to just 4 hours using Mobius equipment. The M108S Trimmer solves the problem of increasing production speed and capacity without compromising the quality of the flower and trim."

Moreover, as the price of cannabis drops and companies are looking for ways to preserve their margins, automation technology is the first step. "Under these market conditions, hand trimming is becoming more of a legacy processing method as machine trimming rises in necessity. By switching to machines, growers can remove the variable of seasonal and unreliable workers, mitigate the risk of product contamination, reduce losses due to repetitive strain injuries, and improve employee retention and morale. With all of these benefits of automation, companies are investing in equipment to see long-term returns, though the M108S Trimmer pays itself back after just one harvest cycle."

New to the industry
Levine explains that automation for cannabis production is relatively new to the industry but not new to the ag world. "While cannabis harvesting procedures are vastly different depending on location and local regulations, automation is a natural evolution of any industry, especially within agriculture. Cannabis companies have recognized the need for automation and started to follow suit. Mobius was one of the first in the space to provide this type of automation technology specifically for cannabis and hemp. As the cannabis industry grew in both medicinal and adult-use markets, operations scaled and became bigger, needing a way to scale production as well. The M108S was the first step in this automation process which was followed by a bucker, sorter, mill, and conveyor system for complete automation integration."

And they recently launched a new addition to their product line. "We are also introducing the new M60 Compact Cannabis Mill, identical to the M210 but smaller and perfect for pre-roll preparation. All equipment is made with 100% stainless steel and is ready for integration into any GMP facility. Mobius has experts available to connect about any of our machines, GMP compliance, the money-back guarantee, or even workflow evaluation and design services."
