CAN (ON): Commenting on large-scale greenhouse developments in Lakeshore

The Municipality of Lakeshore has opened up another online study form regarding the future of large-scale greenhouse developments.

Lakeshore is currently working towards potentially regulating the greenhouse industry before March 2023, which is when an interim control by-law banning greenhouse developments is set to expire.

On December 13, the Lakeshore council voted to move forward with a plan to update current by-laws and regulations around the development of large-scale greenhouse facilities.

The new rules would take into consideration issues around light and odors, issues faced in communities like Leamington and Kingsville, which host a number of large-scale greenhouse operations.

Prior to permitting large-scale greenhouse developments, Lakeshore would also seek a regional stormwater study to identify a common release rate on the various watersheds, a stormwater discharge quality monitoring program as well as a municipal financial impact analysis.
