For twenty years, the Dutch Tjalling Erkelens has put his heart and soul into the development of medicinal cannabis. His company, Bedrocan, is the only one in the Netherlands legally allowed to grow cannabis. Soon he will quit, and as a capstone, he wants to realize one more facility in Denmark.
Erkelens' son takes over the company. As a prestige project, father Erkelens remains involved in the establishment of the facility in Denmark.
Due to increasing demand, mainly from abroad, this additional location in Denmark is necessary. Expansion in the Netherlands is out of the question for the time being because of current laws and regulations. "We hope that those rules will soon be relaxed so that other expansions in the future can take place in the Netherlands," says Erkelens.
The location in Denmark should start providing the first medicinal cannabis from 2024. But he has already achieved his 'goal' over the past 20 years. "I really wanted to establish a company that could function independently. That has succeeded," says the Dutch native with satisfaction.
