“Some overlook the importance of the environment during drying and curing”

“A lot of cannabis growers use environmental sensors for their cultivation. But not everyone thinks of how important the environment is during the drying and curing steps as well,” says Anton Chan, Founder of Kokonaut. The Canadian company makes sensors that help growers monitor their crops from their phones. From small-scale to large-scale growers, any company can use the Kokonaut sensors. But Anton has noticed a particular interest from cannabis growers specifically. “For cannabis growers, the post-harvest process is an essential aspect of getting a high-quality end product. Yet many overlook the importance of the environment during those steps, and not all sensors are versatile enough to accommodate properly. We notice that the Kokonaut sensors have been used a lot to maintain a constant humidity level in the drying process.”

How does it work?
The Kokonaut Mizu is a Wi-Fi environmental sensor that you can monitor through your mobile device. “Growers can retrieve current temperature, humidity, and VPD values to enable a healthier environment and maximize their yield. The sensor does a regular reading, the frequency of which can be changed from every 10 minutes to every hour. With an app on your phone, you can easily access all this data. The app will give you alerts if any of the values deviate from the set parameters. If your humidity drops below 40%, for example, you will immediately get an alert to notify you. Especially with a high-value crop like cannabis, these alerts are very helpful. Environment is key, so when anything deviates, growers need to know right away,” Anton says.

For larger operations, multiple people can monitor one sensor, or they can monitor multiple sensors at the same time. “Based on the collected data, you will get an overview of the historical information. This enables growers to see trends and make informed decisions based on data.”

The sensors are wireless, working on batteries that can last up to two years, depending on how often the user wants the readings. “We have many ideas to further improve the sensors in the future. The next thing we want to do is to add a USB-C attachment to it so that you’re not just reliant on the batteries. According to the feedback from growers, we will continue to adapt and improve.”
