Switzerland: Cannabis project started in Bern and Biel

The cities of Biel and Bern have initiated a pilot project for the distribution of cannabis. Registration opened recently as announced by the University of Bern. Participants in the study will be able to purchase a variety of cannabis products, including cannabis flowers, resin, or liquids with different THC and CBD content, from selected pharmacies starting February 2024.

According to the announcement, the names of the pharmacies will not be published due to security reasons. The study will be carried out in the three cities of Bern, Biel, and also in Lucerne. A total of around 1,000 participants will be accepted, including around 700 in Bern and 170 in Biel.

The University of Bern stated that the registration process for interested individuals in the city of Lucerne, with around 250 participants, is scheduled to proceed in 2024 as planned. Adults residing in the canton of Bern who already regularly consume cannabis are eligible to participate.

Building on insights gained from ongoing pilot studies, the study team anticipates that more individuals will opt to register than can be accommodated. In such cases, residents of the cities of Bern and Biel will be given priority.

The objective of the study, led by the University of Bern and named Script (“Safer Cannabis – Research In Pharmacies randomized controlled trial”), is to investigate the health and social effects of regulated cannabis sales. Advertising is not allowed, and the products must be packaged in a neutral and standardized manner.
