The Medical Cannabis Commission approved emergency regulations after February's public hearing and approved the last of the four cultivator licenses Monday. Manufacturers still have no idea when they will be able to apply because there is no timeline for when applications will open or even when a process will be laid out for them to apply.
The committee also discussed the need to hire an executive director and other staff after receiving funding approval from the state Legislature. The commission also approved a motion to search and obtain outside legal counsel. Commissioner Judge J. Michael Coffey said the purpose behind it is to distance themselves from the Nebraska Attorney General's office to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.
However, advocates say these moves could be for nothing if doctors will not recommend medical cannabis because there are no protections in place.
"No Nebraska physician is able to recommend medical cannabis without fear of losing their license through the Health and Human Services," said Bill Hawkins, a medical cannabis advocate.
