The Moldovan government approved the Regulation on authorization, cultivation, monitoring, marketing and processing of industrial hemp. The document provides for the expansion of opportunities for the use of raw materials obtained from industrial hemp, which can increase the yield per hectare of agricultural land by about 40%. It will also provide private entrepreneurship with more opportunities for investment and agribusiness development.
While until now industrial hemp in Moldova has been used for the production of fibers, seeds and oil, the new regulation allows the processing of different parts of the plant, including stalks, biomass and processed products. Industrial hemp will be able to be used for the production of fuel briquettes, industrial oils, food additives, cosmetics and other products authorized by Moldovan legislation.
Industrial hemp is a technical plant that cannot be used as a raw material for drugs, as it contains negligible amounts of psychoactive substances. The regulation also establishes the procedure for determining the content of tetrahydrocannabinol in plants. The analyses will be carried out during the flowering period, by taking representative samples and analyzing them in accredited laboratories, including those outside Moldova.
The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) will be the agency responsible for authorizing and monitoring the cannabis cultivation process. The permit will be issued to farmers who legally own or use agricultural land.
