Firefly: A bug early warning system/precision crop health monitor

Automated detection of harmful insects while monitoring overall plant health.

In large-scale CEA facilities, it is very difficult to manually inspect plants for pests and disease. If a breakout occurs - it tends to spread quickly with severe losses! Efficiency comes with scale, but the danger of catastrophic loss increases with scale - more crop at risk in a large facility demands more manual scouters which in turn may even increase the chances of pests or disease gaining entry.

Three years ago, with decades of computer networking expertise, an elite team of technology developers turned their attention from supercomputers to the Ag Tech industry with purpose in mind to automate detection of harmful insects while monitoring overall plant health.

The result: “Firefly”, a wireless and self-powered low-cost edge analytics node the size of a credit card, packed with environmental sensors and twin RGB or narrowband imagers – each miniature sensor includes powerful onboard processors, storage and radios for fast and secure cloud communications.

Designed to be deployed in large numbers for high-resolution coverage in 2 or 3-D arrays, edge processing drastically cuts edge-to-cloud traffic and cloud compute/storage to minimise operating costs and ensure scalability.

The Firefly is currently being tested at government research facilities and can be easily paired with or fully integrated into existing CEA systems representing a unique opportunity to enhance present-day product offerings.

The company wishes to explore a range of strategic B2B relationships to accelerate commercial evaluation and deployment as well as additional global initiatives with research partners to expand the Firefly’s useful purpose in support of their patent-pending technology.
