"We are forecasting $100 million in turnover as medical cannabis gains popularity in Australia for pain relief," says Craig Cochran, CEO of Medcan Australia. The company is currently working on what will be the largest vertical indoor cannabis farm in Australia. Once the site is fully operational, they will be able to produce up to six tons of dried flower per year. Recently, A Current Affair took a tour behind the scenes of their $10 million facility. See the video with the full facility tour below.
Nate Jones is the Head of Cultivation and explains that they use technology to control every element of the plant's growth. "We have a full hydroponic setup, and the light is particularly important. Just the right amount is needed to signal when it's time to grow a flower."
"The reason we grow indoors is to control the environmental conditions. This way, we can control all the inputs that the plants have, from light to nutrients. With everything being under control, all plants are being grown under identical conditions. That allows us to have a final product throughout the year that doesn't have any seasonal changes from the outside environment," Nate says. As cannabis is sensitive to humidity, growing indoors also reduces the risk of getting mold in the flowers, he explains.
With medical cannabis prescriptions exploding in Australia in the past two years, companies like Medcan are scaling up their plans, expecting to have a workforce of 100 employees once the new facility comes online.
