Maximizing flower production through increased nutrient uptake

Every grower tries to maximize their crop, as this usually results in a higher turnover. This is especially true for cannabis growers, considering the high value of their crop. At the same time, boosting the yield is not as easy as it sounds, and requires a combination of knowledge and products that might be tricky to find in one place only. That is why Verano365 has developed Thrivedo, a protein surfactant powered by the proprietary OpusMax technology. “OpusMAX is a proprietary aqueous formulation technology that increases the performance of active ingredients that are combined with it,” David Coorts with Verano365 explains. “This delivery system is fundamentally driven by a charged silica particle that acts as a carrier, thus facilitating the self-assembling of the supramolecular structures. The direct consequence is the increased efficiency of the active ingredient in the target organism.”

Maximizing flower production
Specifically, Thrivedo is a yeast-based surfactant that maximize the flower and fruit production and increases the nutrient uptake of plants. “When coupled with the OpusMAX technology, the results are just extraordinary,” says David. “Originally, we have spent some time trialing Thrivedo with other fruiting crops such as peppers and tomatoes, and it worked very well with them,” Herbert Rabalais with Verano365 adds. “Because this solution triggers a more robust vegetative plant, you build more vegetative mass. This helps the plant to absorb more nutrients and water, but it also triggers hormones responsible for flowering.”

Based on the remarkable results in fruiting vegetables, the company shifted its product focus with Thrivedo to cannabis. Recently, Verano365 conducted a commercial trial with a medicinal cannabis grower who was already utilizing nutrient best practices, so that they could better see the effect and benefits of Thrivedo in a professional setting. “The grower was using a controlled fertilizer,” Herbert says. “Thus, the easiest way for him to utilize Thrivedo was to carry out a weekly drench. The majority of the drenches were done in the vegetative stage; however, one application was made after the plants went into flowering. For Thrivedo, it is all about ease of use, so we try to make it user-friendly for growers having various production methods. We don’t want growers to have to change how they are producing plants; rather, Thrivedo can be incorporated into an already existing plant production process that fits the grower’s needs.”

The conclusion of the trial showed that the bud weight increased by 31%; on top of that, lab testing showed that THC content increased by 8.8%, and terpenes by 8.7%. “The takeaway is that the application of Thrivedo allows for increased weight of buds, as well as an increase the quality of the buds. The grower that conducted the trial was extremely happy with the results, as he had a 20 to 1 ROI, which was calculated based on the wholesale price,” Herbert explains. “So, for an operation that grows for the retail market, Thrivedo can provide a substantial increase in profits.”

Tailored application
Currently, the trials for Thrivedo continue, as Verano365 wants to further understand the best way to apply it to different cannabis varieties. “I think that every grower, based on the cultivar they grow, is going to tweak things to maximize the results,” Herbert continues. “As we learn more how to fine tune Thrivedo for each variety, we are going to have a much firmer set of rate and application guidelines. At the same time, each grower is going to adapt the use of Thrivedo based on their own operation.”

As the cannabis market heads towards additional consolidation, with a differentiation between mass and craft producers, growers will have to pay a closer attention to the ROI and put further effort to increase the quality of their cannabis. “I think that there will be many opportunities when it comes to craft production,” Herbert explains. “Similarly, it will be critical to take a closer look at the ROI and find a way to maximize it. And that’s where we come into play: we are here to help growers to maximize profitability, and the medical cannabis trial we carried out is an example of how you can get more out of the current footprint without additional investments. We support our clients throughout the process to enhance their understanding of the benefits that a proper application of Thrivedo can provide. Then, we analyze the data and see the area of improvements, and help them to address each of the variables that characterize every operation.”
